When we consider the qualities of a successful person in school, business or life, one of the most important thing is the ability to maintain personal strength when up against a challenge. There are many people who appear to be strong and successful, but their strength and success can fade quickly when an obstacle gets in their way. People who are able to persevere in these situations always have built it upon a foundation of the mental skill of confidence.
At Huai’an Joy International High School, we approach teaching and learning in a way that is different from traditional classrooms so that our students can develop this essential skill of confidence. When students graduate from our program, they should be the kind of person who will embrace challenges and persevere through obstacles in a way that makes them continue to grow throughout their lives.
Most students I teach seem to come in with an ingrained fear of making mistakes. So when I ask questions in class, most of them are not willing to take the risk to answer. And most of them would never, ever volunteer a question in a class, because this would be an intentional choice with an even greater risk of failure. Why would they intentionally expose themselves to the risk of embarrassment?
Yet this is a psychological weakness, because those who are too afraid to take risks will stagnate in their fear. Students who do not ask or answer questions out of fear will be held back in the long-term from great achievement and power.
I have told my students before that there is a great difference between confidence and pride. Someone who is proud believes that they must maintain the false image of their own perfection. This means that they will work very hard to pretend to be the best, and this means that their greatest fear is for imperfections to be exposed. In reality, there is no confidence in this. So sometimes the people who appear to be the most proud and successful are actually controlled by fear and a lack of true confidence.
True confidence that allows people to face great challenges and persevere through obstacles is a kind of confidence that is not afraid of failure. Instead, a confident person will embrace opportunities for failure, because making mistakes and acknowledging imperfections is the quickest way to meaningful learning and growth.
If students are afraid to make mistakes, then they will not learn as quickly or as deeply. This is why at Huai’an Joy International School we create a culture of student support and empowerment. It is important for us to normalize imperfections and to acknowledge weaknesses. It is the most direct way to overcome them.
Students who have real confidence will become powerful people in the future. They will have the ability to address the difficult problems that most others are afraid of. These are the kinds of people who become leaders and who solve big problems in meaningful and creative ways. These are the students we want to develop at Huai’an Joy International School.
We are passionate about this meaningful objective, and we would love to share more with you about the way that Huai’an Joy International High School is helping to train global leaders for the future. Please schedule a call to find out more, or schedule a visit to come see our classrooms and meet our teachers. We look forward to connecting with you in a meaningful way.
