Mother’s Day is a time when children pay respect to their mothers. Children often give their mothers a gift and a card. Mother’s Day is always on a Sunday. In Britain, it normally takes place in March, or early April. In America, it is always the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day is celebrated in many different countries around the world. Everyone should have the chance to say ‘thank you’ to their mothers.
Common Mother’s Day gifts include cards, flowers, and a home-made baked food. We can thank our mothers for all they do in lots of different ways:
•Making them a card.
•Giving them a cuddle.
•Helping to clean and tidy the home.
•Not just buying them a present!
In our English Classrooms our students discussed and learned more about Mother’s Day. In the Grade One Classroom, our students put first things first to learn common English phrases used on Mother’s Day like “Happy Mother’s Day.” “Thank you Mom!” “Thank you Grandma!” “I love you!”
After we practiced saying words together, as well as singing an English Song about Mother’s Day, then our friends in Grade One put pen to paper and wrote down their feelings in a beautiful card. They wrote “Happy Mother’s Day! Thank you Mom. I love you.” Each card was hand-chosen based on a design they thought their mom would like. Each friend decorated and color the card specially for their mom and or grandma!
In the art class, the children drew colorful bouquets , and will give it to their dear mothers on Mother’s day, wishing her always be young and beautiful.
Our Grade Two students were familiar with Mother’s Day. So in Grade Two we had a discussion. The discussion was “Reasons Why I Love My Mom.” The students had so many good answers!
My mom curls my hair.
My mom cooks yummy food.
My mom have me!
My mom washes my clothes.
My mom plays with me.
My mom gives me hugs.
After our discussion they created a beautiful poster for their mom: “5 Things I Love About My Mom”. They were so creative and thoughtful in their answers. I know their moms will feel proud when they see it!
The students in Grade Two also worked hard to create a 3-D Heart Card. It was very unique and beautiful. Inside they also wrote a Thank You note to their mom. Their thank you’s were heartfelt and very adorable. They also practiced their translating skills by writing the notes in English and Chinese.
Grade Two students also made necklace painting for their mother. Every jewel in the painting is a gift for mothers.
The older students were able to participate in a Mother’s Day Book Making Activity. The Whale English Class discussed Mother’s Day and what it means. We discussed why we celebrate and the fact that there are other people that can celebrate Mother’s Day as well; like our Grandma, Aunt, or Friend.
In the Whale class, the students create a book based on the following writing points:
- I love you because…
- My favorite thing about you is…
- Thank you for always…
These students’ writing were more detailed than the younger students and will make their moms proud!
To end our Mother’s Day post, I’d like to leave you with a quick poem found on the website TWINKL.
You sew my buttons on my clothes,
You give me a tissue for my nose.
You make good things for me to eat,
You buy me sweets for a treat.
You wash my clothes and mend my socks,
Dear Mommy, I love you lots and lots!
